“FashionAFRICANA Celebrates their 10th Anniversary in Style”
PITTSBURGH- December 15, 2011- FashionAFRICANA and The Kelly Strayhorn Theater presented FashionAFRICANA’s 10th Anniversary event on December 9, 2011 at The Kelly Strayhorn Theater.
Over 300 guests attended the stellar event hosted by The New Pittsburgh Courier’s Debbie Norrell. Dwana A. Smallwood, Director of Student Affairs at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa served as the event’s Honorary Chair which featured a Pre-Event Mixer; Live Performances; Fashion Presentations; and an Awards Presentation.

Breathtaking performances were given by Kahil El’Zabar and Dwana A. Smallwood. A Fashion Presentation was also given by Jamaican born supermodel Lois Samuels featuring her collection VESSEL by Lois. Miyoshi Anderson, model and the Executive Director of Pittsburgh Fashion Week was featured as a model in Samuels’ presentation. Both Smallwood and Samuels’ were honored with awards for broadening the standard in fashion and beauty.
FashionAFRICANA’s 10 Anniversary also showcased work by some of Pittsburgh’s finest artisans including David Pohl, Terrance Hayes, Isabelle Strollo, and LeVerne Kemp. Both Samuels and Smallwood were honored with awards for broadening the standard in fashion and beauty.
Started ten years ago by Demeatria Boccella and Darnell McClaurin, fashionAFRICANA explores African history and culture in a contemporary way and collaborates with fashion designers and artists to create new work through various mediums.
